Value in the Deep Blue Sea

PreK has been learning about color value in art and looked at whale murals by Robert Wyland as examples of how an artist can use the lightness and darkness of a color to great effect. His beautiful deep sea murals helped the students visualize how the ocean becomes darker with depth because there is less and less light. To create their own deep sea compositions, they applied different pressure to their blue crayons to represent the "ocean" getting deeper and deeper. Day two was all fun drawing underwater animals including whales, fish, sea turtles, octopus, and sea horses, cutting them out, and gluing them on. Beautiful underwater scenes PreK!
