Looking Into the Distance
Fourth graders were introduced to linear perspective in drawing a few weeks ago and have completed their compositions demonstrating the technique. We talked about ways to create the illusion that some objects are further away than others, such as diminishing size/detail and overlapping. They also became familiar with the terms vanishing point and horizon line, and began to understand that receding edges converge at the vanishing point. Photographs and paintings that demonstrate the technique were studied, including Leonardo da Vinci's, The Last Supper (perhaps your student can tell you where the vanishing point is in this famous painting!).
