Chinese New Year

To go along with first grade's unit on the Chinese New Year, students created either Chinese dragons or sheep (2015 animal). We discussed the history of Chinese scrolls and viewed lots of Chinese dragon images. Students were even shown how to write Happy New Year in Chinese - thank you Mrs. Heinske! Also, our art unit was on space and I love seeing the different ways the students chose to use this long, slender canvas to display their animal. Some dragons are disappearing off the campus while other svelte creations balance beautifully with the negative space and writing...lovely first grade! And in case you can read Chinese, you may notice a few made-up characters...some students wanted to write their dragons names...I recall this first one is Bloodtooth!
